'Nup to the Cup': The Ethical Melbourne Cup Alternative

Nup to the Cup is a glam, rooftop celebration of compassion, community and sparkle – fancy dress, live music and champagne without the cruelty.

The Melbourne Cup is billed as “the race that stops a nation” – but as we learn more about the industry, a darker truth emerges. Every year, horses are pushed beyond their limits, lives are lost on the track, and gambling addiction harms thousands of families across the country.

As a community that cares for each other and the world around us, that’s not a celebration we want to share.

This Cup Day, we’re joining the growing chorus saying Nup to the Cup – and yes to something better. Instead of cruelty and betting odds, we’re raising a glass to compassion, connection, and joy.

Hosted by ACT Greens Leader Shane Rattenbury, this rooftop celebration will be full of sparkle, style, and live music. Get ready for two fabulous sets, including one from nonbinarycode duo, a local Canberra duo bringing fresh sounds and big energy – all at the stunning Howling Moon rooftop bar.
